Twitter went down early this morning. I still can’t access the site.
Now I’m starting to realize why some people were leaving Twitter and seeking some open source alternatives. Twitter can’t be a backbone communication tool, if server problems cripple it for a long period of time.
If a micro-blogging client is going to be this incredibly powerful tool that everyone says it can be, then it needs to have a decentralized structure like the internet itself. Remember the internet was a military invention designed specifically to be invulnerable to crippling. At it’s core you have a decentralized network with countless points of entry. In the event of a foreign invasion, communication would be next to impossible to cripple.
A micro-blogging client needs to follow the same model if it’s going to be something that people will rely on to do all of the wonderful things that a micro-blogging client can do.
I may be mistaken about this, but I believe Google Wave will be able to do this. As far as I u nderstand, anyone can set up a wave on their own server and let it communicate with other waves (I think). Perhaps Google Wave will be a Twitter Killer afterall.
