If you haven’t seen it yet, the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy has a new look. It’s been up for a few weeks now (I think), but I haven’t had a chance to check it out until today. It looks great. It’s beautifully laid out, but it’s still nice and clean. Navigation through the site is intuitive and very straight forward. I love the alphabet tabs on the top. This is exactly what a website like IEP should look like.
I know Josh May was involved on the design and layout side. I’m not sure who else was involved (or I’d list them here). You should go thank him and tell him how nice it looks.
UPDATE: Chris Tennberg was another person involved in the design and layout. You should thank him too.
I’m glad you like the new look, Andy! Yes, Chris was involved and so was Alex Bundy, another fellow philosophy grad at UCSB. Alex did a lot of the programming involved in getting the articles to move over automatically.
The new site has indeed been up for a few weeks. We plan on making announcements in various venues about the redesign soon. We’re just still working out a few things like:
(a) Speed & Reliability:
We’re doing what we can to make sure the pages load quickly and that the site can handle more traffic without getting bogged down.
(b) Formatting:
The articles were moved over into WordPress automatically with a script. But we couldn’t get the new formatting of the articles (header styles, etc.) automated, given that so many of the articles had such different code. So we’ve been having to do it all manually for the most part. So our plan is to launch the site and fix these over the next couple of months. You’ll notice, for example, that the Game Theory article to which you linked has the proper formatting. But some others don’t; their headings might have too small of a font, or the table of contents might not be an indented list, or the references might not be hanging, etc.
Anywho, also of note is the ability now to pull up a list of articles by topic. I think this is a cool new feature, and I hope people use it. So, e.g., you can go on the sidebar on the right, click MnE, then Epistemology, and it will pull up all the epistemology articles in alphabetical order. Pretty neat!
